Chapter 16

I

spent the rest of the night thinking. What else could I do? I felt like I was running out of options.

I still hadn’t given up on Agatha, though. Seeing her progress in Sewall gave me hope that there was a cure out there somewhere.

This morning, though, Thea, Delia, and I were going to see Eunice Willoughby. I wanted to see if the information Brent had given us yesterday had any truth. I couldn’t imagine she could cause much trouble, because she was even older than Grandma—but then again, I didn’t see Grandma slowing down anytime soon.

We decided to go before work. Investigating murder was tough when you had to squeeze it into nonwork hours. Thea and Delia were waiting in my parking lot when I made my way out with three travel mugs of morganmuffel tea. This was the best tea for starting a morning earlier than you wanted to—less caffeine than coffee, with ten times more alertness. I was still testing it, and planned to offer it later this year at the apothecary.

Eunice’s house was a run-down cottage with a small dock on the Piscataqua River, which formed part of the border between New Hampshire and Maine. The tiny yard had front and side gardens. The front was full of flowers, and the side had raised beds of what looked like vegetables. If Eunice took care of these herself, she would have had plenty of energy to kill Mrs. Thompson. Her curtains were all drawn, and I began to feel guilty for coming so early in the morning.

We opened her gate and strode up to the front door. I knocked, but there was no answer. I frowned. You’d think a witch would have some sort of ward set on her gate to let her know when people were there. I looked around at her front garden. Roses were blooming, daylilies were starting to sprout up, and the rhododendron was in full bloom.

Thea knocked on the door. Still no answer.

“Maybe she’s still sleeping? We should come back later,” Delia said.

I shook my head. “Let’s check out back.”

We walked to the side of her house, and I scanned her raised garden beds. The first was tomatoes and garlic. The plants were thriving and healthy. She must have spent a lot of time learning gardening craft.

Delia stifled a scream and pointed to another bed. Agatha lay there, unmoving.

We ran to Agatha, and I checked for her pulse, even though the finger marks around her neck told me not to bother. She was dead.

Delia put her hand on mine and slowly pulled me away from Agatha. “She’s gone.”

I didn’t think I could call Palmer to tell him I’d found another dead person. On the other hand, I couldn’t leave Agatha here.

“What’s going on here?” a woman called from the backyard.

“Mrs. Willoughby? Stay there,” Thea said.

Like any old witch worth her salt, she ignored the command and came to see what we were staring at. “Oh no, not again. I can’t have this.
